MARTA Police Department and Y2K
The MARTA Police Department worked with other MARTA departments and participated in an inventory of all equipment that might be impacted by Y2K problems, mitigation of identified problems, and testing after corrections were made. On New Year's Eve, the Department was staffed at maximum level. All available officers were on duty except for the day shift due to report on the morning of January 1. Extra supplies had been purchased, including everything from flashlight batteries to bottled water, and stored at strategic locations on the MARTA system.
The MARTA Operations Center, which is staffed in support of significant special events involving transit, was activated at 3:00 p.m. on December 31. It is managed by the MARTA Police, but major operating departments, including bus and rail operations, facilities maintenance, station services, paratransit, and the Office of Safety, were represented in the Center with staff on duty while it was activated.
MARTA Police also staffed the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) State Operations Center (SOC). The GEMA SOC afforded the Police Department an opportunity to work with more than 50 State and volunteer agencies on standby to deal with any problems. The SOC also provided access to latest information, including criminal intelligence, status of utilities, current weather information, and activities of other emergency services.
Contingency plans to deal with problems included stopping trains just before midnight in stations with the doors open and restart them again shortly after midnight. Y2K brought no significant incidents on the MARTA system-trains and buses ran all night with no problems, all other systems functioned normally, and crowds in the downtown area were orderly. The planning and work in preparation for Y2K had the desired effect-the evening passed with no more problems than any other special event.
(Note: If you have any Y2K experiences you would like to share with others, please send them to me at the address given below.)
Y2K Had Priority at USDOT. A number of you contacted me to ask about the January issue of the Transit Security Newsletter. There was no January issue due to the exigencies of Y2K. The Department of Transportation gave Y2K issues priority over everything else. Those who were on duty here heard from some of you, and are happy to report that disruptions were few and far between and those that did occur were either minor or unrelated to Y2K.
