GCRTA Police Officer Praised

The efforts of Officer Kevin Powell of the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority Police Department in protecting passengers and employees have been praised in keeping with the highest standards of GCRTA.

When Officer Powell boarded a motor coach on the morning of October 5, 2001, in the City of Euclid, Ohio, he observed a male passenger sitting at the rear of the bus holding a knife. The suspect placed the knife next to his leg to keep it from being seen by Officer Powell. He then began shouting threatening remarks. Officer Powell called for back-up, identified himself, and ordered the man to drop the weapon telling him he was under arrest. When the man did not comply and moved toward several passengers, Officer Powell drew his weapon and pointed it at the suspect ordering him again to drop the weapon. The suspect advanced to approximately six feet of Officer Powell who again ordered him to drop the knife and get on the floor. This time, the suspect dropped the knife and reluctantly got on the floor. At this point, the back-up Officer Powell had called earlier arrived on the scene and assisted him in placing the man in custody. No one was injured. The suspect was charged with various crimes.

Reach MARTA Police Fast. Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority riders can now reach the MARTA Police faster and easier with a new program called #MPD. By dialing #MPD, cellular customers of Verizon and Cingular can connect directly to MARTA’s Police Department. The #MPD program is part of the MARTA Police Department M*PACT (MARTA Police Attacking Crime Trends) program. The direct connection to police that Verizon and Cingular users have will allow MARTA Police to have a faster response time.

CSIR/Transportek Publishes Book on Crime Prevention. CSIR/Transportek of Pretoria, South Africa, recently published a book entitled Crime and Prevention on Public Transport. Aspects of crime and crime prevention discussed in the book include: Types and extent of criminal activity against passengers as well as transit personnel; drive-by shootings; fare evasion and strategies to reduce it; on-board crimes and strategies for riders to prevent them; formal crime prevention strategies; vigilantism and on-board criminal activity; women’s initiatives for crime prevention; crime prevention through environmental design; and development of a community-based model for crime prevention on public transit. The study includes results of a survey of approximately 2,000 commuters in Durban, South Africa, on their experience and the witness of crime prevention on public transit. This survey uses the U. S., Canada, and England as benchmarks.

The cost of the book is $46.70 U. S., which includes air mail. It is available from the following: Oliver Reed, CSIR/Transportek, P.O. Box 395, Pretoria 0001, South Africa (++27 12 841 4362; Fax: ++27 12 841 4054; opage@csir.co.za).
